Very nice Daren! I started all my veggie and herb seeds myself this year (yes, I feel quite proud of myself, lol) and was able to get 100% heirloom varieties so I am really excited this year about my garden!
For peppers I started the following from seed this year: Corno di Toro Jalepeno Hungarian Wax Black Hungarian Red Cap Mushroom Serrano Ancho/Poblano (they are called Ancho when they turn red I guess)
For tomatoes I started the following from seed: Zapotec Pleated Black from Tula Super Marmande Amana Orange Hillbilly German Johnson Yellow Plum Heinz 1439 San Marzano Campbell's 1327 Amish Paste Great White
I have a total of 40 something tomatoes and 20 pepper plants to put in the ground here in another week or so.....very exciting time of year! I plan on making everything I can from them including salsa, spaghetti sauce, tomato paste, ketchup, BBQ sauce, etc.....I have many herbs just for such sauces in my herb garden as well as tons of medicinal herbs.
I look forward to seeing your pics, I will post some of mine when I can remember to get the camera out during the day, lol!
Are you planning on putting anything else in your salsa garden? Basil and oregano would mix nicely with tomatoes and peppers. Have you looked into companion planting for them?
Happy growing; Victoria

Hey Daren Looking good! I just started a garden my self this year. Looks like you have some really nice dirt to work with. Platman, LOL.... That dirt was a royal pain to till up today ....hahahaha the tiller really showed me how out of shape I really am. Now if only it would quit raining so the dirt could dry up a bit so I can retill, and break up some of the bigger clumps. Daren

Ya, I was wondering if it was ever going to stop raining! Im not familiar with the KC area but I know it is still 1-2 weeks to early here to plant any of the warm climate stuff. Here are some pics of what I have going on.....all the mators are tied up together so it really doesnt look like that many until you start counting cups, lol! The smallest of my mators are 12"....they are massive to say the least! Tomatoes: Peppers: I also have some Huckleberries, Wonderberries, Tobacco (for pests), alpine strawberries that I started from seed this year....some can be seen in the pics but not many. I also have a bunch of grape cuttings that I am rooting, so far I have 6 rooted! I also have mature Raspberries, Blackberries, Strawberries, cold hardy Kiwi, Gooseberries, Dewberries, Elderberries and a bunch of herbs in various parts of the yard.....and then I of course grow all the regular vegetables like beans, squash, melons, potatoes etc. I am hoping by the end of this years harvest we will have enough food stored to last us until next years harvest. The grapes are the only things that wont produce for us for a few years though. I hope you both enjoy your garden as much as we enjoy ours......about 7 years ago we started with a small garden with a couple things in a small corner of our yard......now we almost dont even have a yard to mow and are thinking of buying some of the neighbors property due to not enough room for all that we want to grow, lol! I look forward to seeing your garden grow! Happy growing! Victoria

Victoria,
when did you plant your seeds for your pepper's and you mater's ? Those things are huge ,mine are still only about 2" inches tall. My store bought ones are about 6" inches a month ago and are now about 10" inches tall now. How warm did you keep those Lil' guys ?

The first batch of mators and all the peppers were planted the last week of Feb. so they were a week early according to everything I read.....the second batch I planted the second week of March so they were a week late. I started them all in coco and perlite mix 50/50 and they seem to love it! I kept them all around 70 F but they do get warmer during the day. They now spend their time outdoors for the most part unless our temps drop to the low 50's then I bring them into the porch. I am really happy with how well they are doing and how large they are. The tomatoes are all new varieties for me so I cant wait to try them!
Everything I read said to start the seeds 6-8 weeks before the planting date so I leaned to the 8 week mark and since I plan on planting all mine in another week I would say I was a bit early but thats OK with me.....maybe they will produce earlier than they would have normally.
Yep, the size you bought is all I have ever seen from a nursery.....which is why we decided to grow everything from seed ourselves this year.....you just cant beat homegrown with care!
Happy growing; Victoria
